Want to explore diplomacy and how the UN works? There is a good chance to get a taste of real politics, develop soft skills and explore the world – the FAU Model UN project (FAUMUN). Together with the programme representatives, Anabel, Sreeresmi and Celina, V-Studimagazin delves into the work and plans of the university’s Model United Nations.

Surprisingly, Model UN is older than the UN itself, which was established in 1945 after World War II. The idea to show people what the international organization is doing and how things can be achieved was first readapted from the predecessor of the UN, the League of Nations. Since then, Model UN has been all over the world.
At FAU, it all started over ten years ago as a student initiative. Right now, FAU Model United Nations is a multifaceted intensive project with its executive team, 27 members of the FAUMUN block seminar, and 22 representatives of FAUMUN Delegation. The latter will have the chance to participate in the largest MUN conference worldwide – National Model United Nations in UN headquarters, New York City, in March 2024. Thus, from just the student interest the idea grew to the whole university organization providing knowledge and priceless experience.
Anabel Kummer, Project Director:
– In Model UN every participant becomes a delegate of one of the states of the United Nations, where they have to represent their country at a conference. The aim is to create a resolution paper that every delegate of the Member State of the UN can agree with. We work on the topics the UN is currently discussing, so we are always on top of what is going on. For us, students, it is first of all about how international politics might work. It’s also a huge boost in any skills that have to do with rhetoric, giving and writing speeches, negotiations, and soft skills.
Generally, we have two separate projects. On the one hand, there is the time-intensive FAUMUN Delegation seminar that goes in-depth on Model UN and the UN itself. We have weekly sessions and training weekends. In addition, we attend three conferences in the south of Germany (Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Erfurt) before heading to the one in New York. Further, a study trip to Berlin is also in the pipeline. We will visit the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Ministry of Defence, the Centre for International Peace Operations and the Embassy of the country we will represent in New York – this year it is Japan – having a lot of contact with real-world diplomats.
On the other hand, we offer the FAUMUN block seminar where one can get all the basics needed. Then the participants will attend two weekend seminars on MUN (Erlangen and Nuremberg), rules of procedure, speech and negotiation training. Both groups start off separately but meet each other at the conferences and the expert lectures, and also during socials that are organised for getting to know colleagues.
Besides, FAUMUN helps to develop particular talents and skills. Inside the Delegation group, the participants work in teams. One is designing merchandise for the members, for instance, the iconic FAUMUN hoodie. The video team will share the journey in a special contest. Their colleagues are involved in making a journal – kind of a yearbook about the experience. The social media and public relations team helps to spread the word and stay tuned with the latest news.
By the way, the schedule of the FAUMUN Delegation is pretty tough and dense. So far, the students had their start-off meetings and trainings, spent Delegation Day and in November participated in their first conference, ErlangenMUN, together with the MUN colleagues from the University of Bamberg. Later, in March, the two groups of the FAUMUN project, the Delegation and the block seminar, will meet again at the BayernMUN conference.
Sreeresmi Karippurathu Ramachandran, Delegate of FAUMUN Delegation:
– I am deeply passionate about diplomacy and international affairs, and it aligns with my master’s degree in Data Science. As a data scientist, I believe in the power of evidence-based decision-making and I am excited to bridge diplomacy with data-driven insights.
In addition, FAUMUN enhances soft skills like negotiation and public speaking, crucial for industry roles or academic pursuits. This platform offers an invaluable intercultural experience by bringing together students from diverse backgrounds and all parts of the world. The project is dynamic, demanding adaptability and creativity, as I represent different countries at each conference. Furthermore, it adds to the ECTS. In short, my participation in the FAUMUN delegation is a complementary and enriching experience that brings a unique dimension to my academic journey.
Celina Fackler, Delegate of FAUMUN Delegation:
– The project is a great way to connect with students from different study programmes and faculties, as our paths would likely never cross. FAUMUN – just like the real UN – thrives on diverse interests and expertise since topics can vary tremendously from one conference or committee to the next. I think, especially public speaking and negotiating skills are beneficial in any profession no matter the field. The seminar is also held in English, so one can also advance their English skills.
For me, it is also a welcome break from my study programme on international economics as it can get theory-heavy. FAUMUN, on the contrary, provides students with a hands-on approach to diplomacy: you use what you learn right away. Looking at our schedule, I believe, time management will be a crucial skill since there are various deadlines we have to meet.
Anabel Kummer, Project Director:
– Besides the soft skills, students who are thinking of going into diplomacy service later on also can use the project as a possibility to try it out before heading for the real thing. My vision of life totally changed after taking part in FAUMUN, discovering this new world that actually influenced my career plans after university heavily.

FAUMUN – Tauche ein in die Politik, stärke deine Fähigkeiten
Möchtest du Diplomatie und die Arbeitsweise der UN ekrunden? Es gibt eine Chance, einen Geschmack der echten Politik zu bekommen, Soft Skills zu entwickeln und die Welt zu erkunden – das Projekt FAU Model UN (FAUMUN). V – das Studimagazin taucht zusammen mit den Programmrepräsentantinnen Anabel, Sreeresmi und Celina in die Arbeit und Pläne des Model United Nations der Uni.
Überraschenderweise ist Model UN älter als die UN selbst, die 1945 nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gegründet wurde. Die Idee, den Menschen zu zeigen, was die internationale Organisation tut und wie sie ihre Ziele umsetzt wurde vom Vorgänger der UN, der League of Nations, übernommen. Seitdem hat sich Model UN auf der ganzen Welt etabliert.
An der FAU hat alles vor über zehn Jahren als Studierendeninitiative begonnen. Inzwischen ist FAU Model United Nations ein vielfältiges, intensives Projekt mit einem eigenen Führungsteam, 27 Mitgliedern des FAUMUN Blockseminars und 22 Repräsentant*innen der FAUMUN Delegation. Die letztere wird 2024 die Chance haben, an der größten MUN-Konferenz weltweit teilzunehmen – National Model United Nations im UN-Hauptquartier in New York City. So ist aus dem reinen Interesse Studierender eine universitätsübergreifende Organisation gewachsen, die Wissen und eine einzigartige Erfahrung vermittelt.
Anabel Kummer, Projektdirektorin:
– Bei Model UN werden alle Teilnehmenden zu Delegierten eines Staates der Vereinten Nationen, das sie bei einer Konferenz repräsentieren müssen. Das Ziel ist es, ein Beschlusspapier zu erstellen, mit dem alle Delegierten der Mitgliedsstaaten der UN einverstanden sind. Wir arbeiten mit Themen, die auch die UN aktuell diskutiert, also sind wir immer nah dran an dem, was gerade passiert. Für uns Studierende geht es vor allem darum, wie internationale Politik funktionieren könnte. Es ist außerdem eine große Stärkung unserer Fähigkeiten, die mit Rhetorik, Reden schreiben und vortragen, Verhandeln und sozialer Interaktion zu tun haben.
Generell haben wir zwei separate Projekte. Einerseits gibt es das zeitintensive Seminar der FAUMUN Delegation, das sich ausführlich mit Model UN und der UN selbst beschäftigt. Wir haben wöchentliche Sitzungen und Trainingswochenenden. Zusätzlich besuchen wir drei Konferenzen in Süddeutschland (Erlangen, Nürnberg und Erfurt) bevor wir nach New York reisen. Eine Studienreise nach Berlin ist auch in der Pipeline. Wir werden das Außenministerium, das Bundesministerium der Verteidigung, das Zentrum für Internationale Friedenseinsätze und die Botschaft des Landes, das wir in New York repräsentieren werden – dieses Jahr ist es Japan – besuchen und viel Kontakt mit echten Diplomat*innen haben.
Daneben bieten wir das FAUMUN Blockseminar an, in dem man all die nötigen Basics lernen kann. Die Teilnehmenden besuchen dann zwei Wochenendseminare von MUN (Erlangen und Nürnberg), erhalten Rhetorik- und Verhandlungstraining. Beide Gruppen starten separat voneinander, aber treffen sich auf den Konferenzen und bei den Expert*innenvorträgen, und auch bei Treffen, die organisiert werden, um unsere Kolleg*innen kennenzulernen.
Außerdem hilft FAUMUN, besondere Talente und Fertigkeiten weiterzuentwickeln. Innerhalb der Delegationsgruppe arbeiten die Teilnehmenden in Gruppen. Eine designt Merchandise, zum Beispiel den ikonischen FAUMUN Hoodie. Das Videoteam teilt die Reise in einem speziellen Wettbewerb. Ihre Kolleg*innen erstell ein Journal – eine Art Jahrbuch über die Erfahrung. Das Social Media Team und das PR-Team helfen, Neuigkeiten über das Projekt zu verbreiten und die neusten Entwicklungen zu teilen.
Übrigens ist das Programm der FAUMUN-Delegation ziemlich stramm und vollgepackt. Bisher hatten die Studierenden schon ihre ersten Meetings und Trainings, veranstalteten einen Delegation Day und nahmen im November an ihrer ersten Konferenz, der ErlangenMUN teil, zusammen mit den MUN-Kolleg*innen der Universität Bamberg. Im März werden die zwei Gruppen des FAUMUN Projekts, also die Delegation und das Blockseminar, sich bei der BayernMUN Konferenz wieder treffen.
Sreeresmi Karippurathu Ramachandran, Delegierte der FAUMUN Delegation:
– Diplomatie und internationale Angelegenheiten sind meine großen Leidenschaften, und das geht gut mit meinem Masterstudium der Data Science einher. Als Datenwissenschaftlerin glaube ich an die Macht evidenzbasierter Entscheidungsvorgänge und freue mich, Diplomatie und datengestützte Erkenntnisse zu verbinden.
Zusätzlich erweitert FAUMUN Soft Skills wie Verhandeln und öffentliches Reden, die für die Arbeit in der Industrie und Wissenschaft zentral sind. Diese Plattform bietet wertvolle interkulturelle Erfahrungen, indem sie Studierende verschiedenster Hintergründe und aus der ganzen Welt zusammenbringt. Das Projekt ist dynamisch und verlangt Anpassungsfähigkeit und Kreativität, da ich bei jeder Konferenz ein anderes Land repräsentiere. Außerdem kann man ECTS sammeln. Um es kurz zu machen, meine Teilnahme an der FAUMUN-Delegation ist eine bereichernde Erfahrung, die meine akademische Reise um eine einzigartige Dimension erweitert.
Celina Fackler, Delegierte der FAUMUN Delegation:
– Das Projekt ist eine gute Möglichkeit, sich mit Studierenden anderer Studiengänge und Fakultäten zu vernetzen, wo sich unsere Wege sonst nie treffen würden. FAUMUN – genau wie die echte UN – profitiert von breit gestreuten Interessen und Expertisen, weil so die Themen von einer Konferenz oder einem Komittee zum nächsten sehr unterschiedlich sein können. Ich denke, dass öffentliches Sprechen und Verhandlungsgeschick in allen Berufen von Vorteil sein können. Das Seminar wird außerdem auf Englisch gehalten, also kann man auch seine Sprachkenntnisse verbessern.
Für mich ist es auch eine willkommene Abwechslung von meinem Studium der internationalen Wirtschaft, das sehr theorielastig sein kann. FAUMUN ist im Gegensatz geht Diplomatie sehr praktisch an: Du nutzt was du lernst sofort. Angesichts unseres Zeitplans glaube ich, dass Zeitmanagement eine Fähigkeit von zentraler Wichtigkeit sein wird, weil es gilt, einige Deadlines einzuhalten.
Anabel Kummer, Projektdirektorin:
– Neben dem Erwerb von Soft Skills können Studierende, die sich vorstellen könnten, später im diplomatischen Bereich zu arbeiten, das Projekt als Möglichkeit nutzen, diese Arbeit einmal auszuprobieren, bevor sie sich der echten Sache verpflichten. Mein Blick aufs Leben hat sich nach meiner Teilnahme an FAUMUN komplett verändert, weil ich diese neue Welt entdeckt hatte, die meine Karrierepläne für nach dem Studienabschluss stark beeinflusst hat.
